When should I order heating oil?

There isn't a perfect answer for when you should order heating oil. It depends on a few variables and one of them is personal preference.

At Sel-Lo Oil, any order placed for less than 100 gallons comes with an additional $25 truck fee, so allowing your tank to slightly empty out before placing an order is advised.

Most tanks are 275 gallons. That means every quarter your gauge empties you've used around 70 gallons of heating oil. At half of a tank, you would need around 140 gallons to fill your tank. If you're the type of person that likes to keep their tank full, then waiting until you hit about halfway on your gauge would be a good time to place your order.

You never want to risk your tank going completely empty, so it is important to monitor when your heating oil tank's gauge starts to move below a half. When you get to a quarter of a tank remaining that means you have at most 70 gallons remaining, and it's getting close to time to order. Many delivery companies, including Sel-Lo Oil, will charge extra if an emergency delivery is needed, so you want to make sure you order heating oil before that becomes necessary.
