What Type of Fuel Should You Order If You Have an Outside Tank
One of the most common questions we receive at Sel-Lo Oil is "What type of fuel should I put in my tank?" The primary factor in the decision-making process is where the tank holding your heating fuel is located. If the tank is outside and exposed to the cold, harsh winters of central Pennsylvania, then the fuel needs to be something that has a lower gel point (fuel doesn't freeze, instead it will gel and clog the fuel line or worse). For reference, according to Weather.Gov, the coldest temperature in Altoona, PA's history was -25 °F on January 19, 1951. Below-zero temperatures are always a possibility in our area, and nobody wants his or her fuel gelling when it's needed the most. Now that we have an understanding of what happens to fuels when they reach their gel point, it's time to take a look at the options available to you. Kerosene is the heating fuel we provide with the lowest gel point at as low as -40°F. Heating Oil has the highest gel point at as low as 17.5°F. We also offer a 50/50 blend of kerosene and heating oil which would have a gel point around as low as -11.25°F. As you can see, the safest choice for any outside tank is kerosene. There is one other alternative to consider when making your heating fuel choice. We also offer a winter fuel treatment additive which can lower the gel point by as much as 40°F. At the time of writing this article, a bottle of additive costs $21.00 and treats 250 gallons of fuel. We cannot make the decision for you, but hopefully this has helped to educate you on the matter. Every customer's tank conditions are unique and he or she should do the appropriate research into which fuel is right for each home. Hopefully, this served as a useful tool, but this should not be the only source of information when taking this matter into consideration.
Be Prepared If You Run Out of Fuel
Do you have a plan, in case your home runs out of heating fuel? There's nothing scarier than losing heat in cold weather. Not only is the cold uncomfortable, but freezing temperatures are hazardous to the safety of your family and home. It is important to have a plan in place, just in case your heating fuel tank hits empty. Luckily, there are preventative measures you can take to ensure you stay warm, even if you run out of fuel. One of the most effective items to keep on hand is a kerosene heater or gas furnace. They are worth purchasing for emergency heating because they are simple to start and only require a little kerosene or natural gas. These heaters are available in a variety of sizes and provide plenty of heat. When used correctly, they are perfectly safe to operate indoors. We recommend you stay prepared with an emergency kit that includes these key items: • Kerosene heater or gas furnace • 5 gallons of kerosene • Extra nozzle • Filter • Straw or rubber hose • Adjustable wrench If you are in need of blended fuel or kerosene, let Sel-Lo Oil deliver quality fuel to your home!
